Julies Mae Porch was born on August 28, 1934 in Rice, Texas to the parents of Gilbert Porch Sr. and
Henretta Kirven Porch. She was one of eight children born to this union. With her family moving often
due to farming, Julies Mae received her formal education in various Robinson County and Navarro
County public schools. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age.
In the early 1950s, Julies Mae courted John Henry Thomas, Sr., and they later raised three children
together Lula Mae Thomas, John Earl Thomas, and Ethel Lee Thomas. She also had a special connection
and motherly bond with her bonus son John Henry Thomas, Jr. After a serious health illness that left her
paralyzed on the right side of her body, Julies Mae took the role of being a mother and homemaker
while John Henry worked in the fields.
Julies Mae’s interests included family, fishing, flowers, crossword puzzles, dominoes, collecting stuffed
animals, bingo, watching Tyler Perry plays, watching television ministry shows, and listening to The
Williams Brother’s gospel music. She devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family and
special friends. Her quick wit and sweet sass enlightened any given moment.
